In home landscapes there are typically two types of walls built: retaining walls and freestanding walls.

The position of a home on flat or sloping ground is typically what determines if a freestanding wall or a retaining wall is required.

--Freestanding walls are better used when the ground is flat, and are more commonly used to divide landscapes into different areas, helping to break up open space and add visual interest to your yard.

--Retaining walls are required for slopes and structural support purposes, as they use footings to hold a wall in place and better retain soil.

Building a retaining wall can serve several purposes, depending on your needs and the landscape you're working with. Here are some common reasons:

  1. Prevent Erosion: If your property is on a slope, a retaining wall helps stabilize the soil and prevents erosion caused by rainwater or wind.

  2. Leveling Slopes: Retaining walls can help create more usable space by leveling out areas of your yard, making it easier to plant, mow, or build.
  3. Improving Aesthetics: A well-designed retaining wall can add visual appeal to your landscape, creating structure and texture. It can be built with decorative stone, brick, or other materials to complement your home.

  4. Drainage Control: Retaining walls can assist in managing water flow, ensuring that water doesn’t collect in unwanted areas or cause flooding. With proper drainage systems, a retaining wall can direct water away from your foundation.

BEFORE- Drainage issues with water going over an existing wall.

AFTER - A new taller wall works with grading to direct water away.

  5. Creating Terraces: In sloped yards, a retaining wall can divide the space into terraced levels, making it easier to plant different types of vegetation, create garden beds, or have separate outdoor areas.

  6. Supporting Outdoor Features: If you’re building patios, decks, or walkways, a retaining wall can help create a stable base and prevent shifting or settling over time.

  7. Increased Property Value: A professionally built retaining wall can increase your property’s value, as it can enhance the land’s functionality and curb appeal.

  8. Protecting Structures: If your home or other buildings are near a slope or hillside, a retaining wall can act as a protective barrier, preventing shifting soil from damaging structures.
